Before attending and performing at the American Music Awards On Friday night, teenage pop star Justin Bieber did something decidedly less glamorous: he took a paternity test. According to media reports, Bieber took the test to prove that he is not the father of a fan's four-month-old son, as she claims he is.
A few weeks ago, 20-year-old Mariah Yeater became front-page news when she filed a paternity lawsuit against Bieber. In her suit, Yeater alleged that she had become pregnant during a backstage rendezvous with Bieber following a concert in California in October 2010. Following her son's birth in July of this year, Yeater initially claimed that her ex-boyfriend was the father. She soon changed her tune, however, and accused Bieber of fathering the boy.
Bieber has repeatedly denied the allegations set forth in the lawsuit, claiming that he never even met Yeater. In an effort to prove his innocence, he took the paternity test. The results of the test are not yet known.
Before Bieber took the test, Yeater withdrew her lawsuit against him. However, she is reportedly still hoping to reach a financial settlement with the pop star. Considering her changing story regarding the paternity of her son, that seems unlikely to happen. In fact, Bieber is reportedly considering taking legal action against Yeater if the paternity test proves that he is not the father of her child.
Interestingly, if Yeater's paternity allegations turn out to be true, she may be prosecuted for statutory rape (she was 19 and he was 16 on the night of the alleged encounter). However, she continues to insist that Bieber is the father of her child.
