People are aware that television shows are not real. They know that stories are written for dramatic purposes. Although people are more than capable of separating "make believe" from reality, some television episodes can spread false information. A group of over 2,600 concerned citizens are asking the producers of the popular television show 'glee' to air service announcement that would clarify some mixed messages.

Two teen characters on the show who gave up their baby for adoption vowed in recent episode that they would take back sole custody of their child. The show made it seem like all that they had to do was prove themselves to good people and throw a few missteps in the way of the adoptive parent.

The concerned citizens signed a petition that the show is perpetuating the harmful myth that a biological mother can just change her mind on a whim and regain custody of her child even after signing legal documents giving up her rights.

A fear is created says petitioners, for both adoptive parents and adopted children that their lives could be torn apart at any point. Some state laws do provide a revocation period often limited to 30 days or less. Other state laws do not allow a birth mother to change her mind after signing the legal release of parental rights.

If you find yourself with adoption concerns or custody questions, television is not the best source for answers. An experienced family law attorney can sit with you and explain the circumstances of your situation, answering any fears or concerns you may have.
